Armando Trapote, well deserved Spanish Showjumping Absolute Champion 2022

Our home rider finished off his Championship campaign as he began, in flying form with the aptly named ‘Tornado’

Rubén Gómez Crespo won Gold in the 1.40m, Classic Championship and  Diego Ramos Maneiro Gold in the Young Riders Championship

Armando Trapote Is the new Spanish Showjumping Absolute Champion 2022.  With a well deserved win after demonstrating real talent across all of the Qualifying and Final rounds.  Today’s Final was designed by  internationally renown Javier Trenor and kept the excitement going right up to the last horse and rider crossing the finish line in the second round of jumping today. Armando was a very popular winner here at Montenmedio today and was riding the 11 yr old ‘Tornado’, by ‘Toulon’, dam sire  ‘Contender’owned by Yeguada Valbanera SL.

There were two final rounds today to decide the winners of the Absolute Championships. The class was set up in the grass David Broome arena.

With only two clears in the first round  Armando Trapote remained on zero cumulative penalties with ‘Tornado’, making him the last to jump in the second round.

Santiago Nuñez with ‘Chakira’ also moved up in the rankings with a super clear round.

Jesús Garmendia Echevarría ‘Callias’, had four faults and dropped behind Armando in the rankings.  All in all,  the first round caused quite a shake up of the leader board.

The second round course was well up to height,  the first, and biggest challenge in this round  was a really impressive line of jumps, fence four, an upright followed in six strides to fence 5abc,  a one stride treble, and then five strides to fence number 6.  This imposing line of fences accounted for most of the faults in the round, whilst the double at 9 also caught out a few horses. The very last fence was an upright topped by a white plank and this also took a few victims.

Third last to go and jumping for Bronze was Jesús Garmendia Echevarría with ‘Callias’ (‘Companiero’ x ‘Casco’),  carrying just 4 points in the championship from the last round. This pair took the middle of the treble and also fence 9a with the hind legs, finishing on 8 penalties in this round, and with an overall total of 12 in the championship, securing them the  Bronze medal!

Santiago Núñez Riva and ‘Chakira Z’ (‘Crown Z’ x ‘Quidam de Revel’) had an unlucky pole over the second fence,  and also one at fence 9, with a few time faults added,  they finished their championship in Silver place on 11 penalties!

The last to go was the current leader,  Armando Trapote with ‘Tornado’, who was still on zero penalties. There were gasps from the crowd as the middle and last part of the treble fell and the crowd were on tenterhooks as this pair bounded around the rest of the course showing endless talent and didn’t touch another pole, landing over the last, well with the time allowed, and winning the Spanish Showjumping Absolute Championship 2022, much to the delight of the home crowd.

There were also great jumping rounds from Teresa Blázquez Abascal with ‘Nasa de Toxandria’ who jumped on of the few clears seen today and Ismael García Roque with ‘Gaudí’ last years’ Champion and these two riders finished in equal fourth on 17 points.

Rubén Gómez Crespo won his second Championship medal today in the Classic 140m Championship, this time taking Gold, one up from yesterday’s Silver in the 1.30m. , Rubén finished off his Championship run without any faults on the extremely talented 12yr old ‘Allblack de Gressoux’, by ‘Pacific des Essarts’ x ‘Queiros du Riou HN’ owned by Gisele Richardot.

Ismael García Roque, took the silver with the 8yr old ‘Cocopelli B’, who is owned by Álvarez Moya Horses and is by ‘Cascadello’. With a penalty score of 6 in the first round this pair went on with foot perfect rounds in the rest of the Championsip.  Bronze was taken by Mario Villapalos Rodríguez with ‘Hermes de las Agrupadas’ (‘Baloubet’s Son x Saladino).

Diego Ramos Maneiro kept his title this year in the Young Rider Championships. This Final was also two rounds with ten riders participating. Held in the grass main arena Montenmedio the course was imposing. Diego was riding the experienced 15yr old, 'Texas de Trebompe’ (Gin Tonic Star x Loutano) and they had 8 faults in the first round. Despite this there was a large number of faults across the board which meant that he was well placed to challenge the top three riders as they entered into the second  part of the Final where a super clear round catapulted him into Gold position. The other competitors with the same penalties were Ignacio Astolfi and Pilar Mateos de UrbinaIgualmente.  Alex Codina Leria with ‘Jarno’ (‘Non Stop’ x ‘Sheyenne de Baugy’) jumped a super clear and was the winner of the Silver medal, whilst Ignacio Astolfi, had one fence and also time which ended up with him taking Bronze with a total of 14 faults.
