The penultimate day of the first week of the XXXII Andalucía Sunshine Tour once again delivered a packed, high-level schedule, with 13 classes run across five arenas. The undisputed star of the day was Edouard Schmitz, who produced a brilliant double, claiming victory in both the main Big Tour class and the feature Medium Tour event. The Swiss rider made the most of his experience and current top form to secure the wins, further underlining his strong position in the Longines FEI Ranking.
Although there were no Spanish victories on this occasion, several home riders placed among the top finishers in a highly competitive day that served as the perfect warm-up for Sunday’s finale of the opening week of Spain’s longest-running showjumping circuit.
The highlight of the Big Tour, the 1.45m Longines FEI Ranking class, was won by Edouard Schmitz aboard Dillen 111 Z, a 10-year-old by De Flor 111. Schmitz was the fastest of the 12 clear rounds that made it into a jump-off contested by 18 combinations. Italy’s Riccardo Pisani finished second with Scooby-Lou, while Belgium’s Gilles Thomas, who has climbed to fourth place in the latest Longines FEI Ranking, took third with Plus Belle van T&L.
In the 1.35m Big Tour, the win went to the Netherlands thanks to Finn Boerekamp and Let It Be. Spain’s Kevin González de Zárate once again delivered a strong performance, finishing third with Seronera and keeping himself firmly in the mix at the top of the leaderboard.
The Medium Tour featured four classes, with the standout being the 1.50m, where Schmitz confirmed his dominance by adding a second victory to his tally. This time he topped the class with Karel Doorman, an 11-year-old by Dakar VDL. Belgium’s Roy van Beek placed second with Diamant de Quidam-H OLD, while Germany’s Kendra Claricia Brinkop impressed by finishing both third and fourth with Replay van’t Paradijs and Gatsby le Magnific.
Italian riders locked out the top spots in the 1.40m Medium Tour, with Camilla Vittadini taking the win on S’Adriana Denfer, followed closely by her compatriot Riccardo Pisani, once again among the leading riders, with Capuchine du Marais.
A similar scenario unfolded in the 1.35m, although this time Belgium took centre stage, as Louise Losfeld claimed victory with Athina Louise Z, ahead of Ignace Philips de Vuyst riding Rembrandt van het Keysersbos.
Always fast and efficient around the Montenmedio arenas, Britain’s Holly Smith added another win to her tally in the 1.30m Medium Tour, delivering a decisive round with Lochan D. van Altrido.
The Small Tour also comprised four classes. The 1.45m was won by Andrea Pisani with Charlemagne JT Z, while Spain’s José Antonio García Diana once again featured among the best, finishing sixth with Marola P&M. Finland’s Saara Kojola took top honours in the 1.40m with Quartz van de Heemstede, a class in which Spain’s Irati Osoro impressed with a fine second place aboard Dream Boy d’Aiguilly. Belgium claimed the 1.35m through Louis Mathieu and Et Toc de Hus, and Sweden’s Olivia Berhakra rounded out the list of winners by taking the 1.30m with Maggie.
CSI1* and Regional Classes
The 1.20m CSI1* once again attracted over 100 starters, requiring the class to be split into two groups. These were led by Switzerland’s Teresa Stokar with Isalottie and China’s Yumo Han with O-Mero van’t Streyehof. In the 1.10m, British riders dominated, with Ella Stanford and Kiekoet taking the win ahead of Alfie Bradstock and Gladstone, who had to settle for second place this time.
A regional pony class (1.10m) completed the day’s programme, with Britain’s Emily Gulliver clocking the fastest time aboard Renkum Kickstart.
Sunday will bring the curtain down on the first week of the Andalucía Sunshine Tour, with a thrilling final day ahead featuring four Grand Prix classes: Big Tour, Medium Tour, Small Tour and CSI1*.
The Andalucía Sunshine Tour is sponsored by the Junta de Andalucía, through the Ministry of Tourism and Andalusia Abroad, and the Provincial Council of Cádiz—institutional support that continues to strengthen the Tour’s international profile and its sporting, economic and tourism impact on the region.
