The event will include a CSIO for Junior and Young Riders, further expanding the reach of this intense sporting event, to more than 550 classes and 2.5 million euros in prizes.
This Thursday the16th of January the new edition of the Andalucía Sunshine Tour will open its doors. This equestrian event is held at its Cadiz base, Montenmedio, with more than 1,000 riders and 3,200 horses from 57 countries, competing here at the installations over the next nine weeks of intensive competition. The shows run until the 23rd of March, there will be 550 classes; 38 of these will be Federación Ecuestre Internacional, Longines Ranking classes and in all, 2.5 million euros will be handed out in prizes. New to this year is the CSIO for Junior and Young Riders with teams from various countries competing against each other. Once again this year, dressage will also a prominent event here at the Andalucía Sunshine Tour, as it will be host to the third week of the Dressage Circuit that begins in Jerez and will end here in Vejer, taking place from March 19th to 22nd including various categories as well as a CDI3*.
The President of the ‘Diputación Provincial de Cádiz’ (Provincial Council of Cadiz), Almudena Martínez, oversaw the official presentation of the event today in Cadiz. The Vice President, Juancho Ortiz, the director of the Organising Committee of the event, Teresa Blázquez and international rider, Armando Trapote were also present.
The President of the Provincial Council referred to this sporting event as “the first major event of 2025 in the province of Cádiz”. Almudena Martínez stated that for such internationally important events, the Provincial Council has created the ‘Office of Major Events’, which encourages development cultural and sports industries in the province and helps them to reach their full potential. This in turn leads to positive repercussions in terms of employment, promotion and tourism.
Teresa Blázquez pointed out that the ten best world ranked showjumping riders will participate in the tour at Montenmedio, the installations are not only ideal to prepare horses and riders for the coming season but are also key in the promotion of equestrian businesses, the buying and selling of horses and other equestrian resources.
The event director also thanked the Provincial Council for their support of the event; with sponsorship increased up to 120,000 euros this year, and stated that the activity created by the event counts on the surrounding area’s infrastructure of restaurants and hotels in La Janda. With such an influx of visitors to the Tour these businesses can open up their doors much earlier in the season allowing a healthy ‘de-seasonalization’ of their businesses.
The immediate economic importance of the event is unquestionable. More than 14,000 people are accredited, this brings in more than 60 million euros. 250 jobs are created that are directly related to the Tour and around 1,400 indirect ones. The Tour is also sponsored by the Andalucían Regional Ministry of Tourism and Foreign Affairs (Consejería de Turismo y Andalucía Exterior de la Junta de Andalucía).
And finally,Teresa Blázquez extended an invitation to all horse lovers to come to visit the installations and enjoy the competition. “We have magnificent installations. they are expansive and there are many different areas where you can come watch and enjoy this sport. There are classes of all levels including pony classes for the youngest riders. We also have various restaurants and cafes, a commercial zone with shops and plenty of parking; all based in a magnificent natural environment. This is a small city dedicated to horses and you are all invited to come and enjoy a fantastic family day out.¨
