Today was a local holiday celebrating Andalucia and the showground here at Montenmedio was full of curious visitors keen to see for themselves the world class riders competing here at the most important jumping Tour in Europe. An especially electric atmosphere surrounded the Big Tour class today, which was sponsored by the official German television station for the Sunshine Tour, Clip My Horse. The channel broadcasts every class live from Montenmedio throughout the 6 weeks of competition. Victory today was claimed by the Swedish rider Marcus Westergren riding “Astree de Burgo”, he told us; “It was a marvellous feeling to win, the mare jumped really well and I feel delighted with her efforts today, she is only just 9yrs old, but she is a great competitor. However, she also has quite a character!
The course was designed by Javier Trénor and took no prisoners with only 9 combinations getting through to the jump off. The Spanish rider Carolina Aresu with “Untrepide de Puychety” was second with a great round. She told us; “It was an extremely technical track and very demanding, I had to have everything calculated, especially as I was first to go. My horse was incredible and jumped very fast and clear. I just hope he isn’t too tired for the Grand Prix on Sunday!
Pedro Junqueira completed the podium with “Prince Royal Z MFS”. This pair were the winners of the Longines GP in La Baule, 2017. They also took part in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The 1.45m class was won by the incredibly consistent German rider Kendra Claricia Brinkop who won the1.35m yesterday and rides for Stephex stables. Once again she won this bigger class with the lovely mare “Ultrachic de Charmois”. Agustín Covarrubias with “Larbraker” from Chile stopped the clock in less than a second behind her to take second place and the Dutch rider Vincent Voorn with “Rubio Monocoat Electric” was third.
126 horses took part in the 1.40m Accumulator class. The legendary French rider, Michel Robert demonstrated his skill today taking first and third places in the Big Tour B with “Une Etoile Landaise” and “Van Kilmor” respectively and, not content with that, he was also second in the 1.35m class behind another legend in our sport, the dutch rider Henk van de Pol riding “Gravin Trojka S”.
Moroccan riders dominated the Big Tour, 1.30m class. Taking both of the top spots were Mohamed Al Ahrach and El Ghali Chaoui El Faiz .
Once again in the Medium Tour, Jessica Hewitt and “Hot Bluebird” took first place this time in the 1.40m. This talented British rider is almost always at the top of the podiums here in the Sunshine Tour. The German rider Enno Klaphake and the Spanish rider, Jose Antonio Garcia Diana were the winners of the other two classes in this section.
The three Small Tour classes were won by Tom Wachman for Ireland in the 1.25m class and the British ridersSophie Holliday and Kyle Bedford in the 1.25m and 1.10m resp.
