Matthew Sampson is on top form with a second top win, this time in the Ayuntamiento de Vejer Trophy

The 1.45m Longines Ranking class had over 40 entries from top international riders. Matt took the top spot with ‘Fabrice DN’

Kevin González de Zárate was the winner of the Suzuki Jump&Drive fun class

What can we say! British rider Matthew Sampson is clearly on excellent form and took the top spot in the first Longines Ranking class here at the October Tour.  The class was sponsored by the Ayuntamiento de Vejer, and was a speed class set at 1.45m, held in the geotextile arena, Milton. Matt was riding ‘Fabrice DN’ owned by HK Horses, ‘he a very fast horse’ he told us and is by ‘Gelha’s VDL Emilion’ with the dam sire being  ‘Baloubet du Rouet’.  Matt stopped the clock in 61.31 seconds over half a second faster than Julie Welles who was riding her very successful mare, ‘Greatfull’.

In fact American riders did extremely well in the class, taking second, third and fifth places, with Paris Sellon and ‘Anna Jo’ in third and Laura Kraut with ‘Dorado 212’, in fifth. Slipping in between the Americans was the legendary Swiss rider Martin Fuchs, who is currently standing in second place in the FEI Rankings. Today he was riding the mare ‘Che Tipa’, who is owned by Willow Grace Farms.

The mayor of Vejer, Francisco Manuel Flor Lara gave out the trophies alongside the local representative for tourism in Vejer, José Ortiz.

Matt continued his form in the 1.40m, nearly winning the class with ‘Elisa BJX’ but was pipped at the post by the Spanish rider, Jorge Bidón Daurella with ‘Duska’ who stopped the clock in 52.22s, just ahead of Matt’s 53.06s. Spanish riders did very well overall in this class, also taking third and fourth places, Carolina Villanueva Suárez with ‘Voice de Chenaie’ and Kevin González de Zárate with ‘Kristal’s Beauty B’.  The Irish rider Niamh Mcevoy with ‘Aconzina PS’ was fifth.

Eleanor Hall Mcateer was on the podium again today, with ‘Billy Penny’, in the very fast 1.30m class. In fact it was a British top three as Kayleigh Watts took both of the other podium places, second with ‘One Saharah’ and third with ‘Edinson Des Matis’.

But Kayleigh wasn’t finished there, as she took the winning spot in the 1.20m with ‘Whisper of Joy’ whilst Hannah Buchan with ‘Vanina de Pience’ was our American winner in the 1.10m.

The busy day of jumping here at the Tour continued with classes for the 5 and 6yr old Young Horses both of which were won by the Spanish rider Imma Roquet. In the 6yr olds she won with ‘Elba del Maset’ and in the 5yr olds with ‘Dalia del Maset’. The top three in the 6yr olds were all Spanish with Kevin González de Zárate and ‘Mesala del Amor’ taking second and Jose Fumero with ‘Granit de Conques’ third.  In the 5 yr olds  the top six places went to Spanish riders, with Julio Arias Cueva and ‘Levia Z’ in second and Jose, once again in third, this time with ‘Geoffrie Z’.

These are the main results of the day in this week one of the CSI3* II Andalucía October Tour. Sponsored by Consejería de Turismo, Cultura y Deportes de la Junta de Andalucía and co-financed by the European Union.

Jump&Drive Suzuki

The Suzuki sponsored Jump&drive class is a fun class held for the first time here back in March. The course was set at 1.10m and began over 6 fences followed by the rider dismounting and jumping a small water jump, then driving a Suzuki Swift Sport around a windy obstacle, course much to the delight of the crowd. The showjumping course jumped well, with riders angling their fences and then gamely leaping over the water fence on foot,  to loud cheers from the crowd, before they got into the Swift  In the end three Spanish riders took the podium places with the winner being , Kevin González de Zárate. Kevin’s mount ‘Higgins,’was neat and fast over the course and Kevin drove a very speedy and accurate, round in the Swift, winning the class in 76.98s.  Alejandro Fernández Sánchez with ‘Rapid Boy II’ took second place and in third was Álvaro Castro Román with ‘Princesa del Fabris’. We would like to thank all the participants and the crowd for their enthusiastic support of this entertaining class which was also generously sponsored by Victoria Cervezas.
