Matthew Sampson is back. He has been a loyal visitor and favourite, here at Montenmedio for many years. This season he has hardly been out of the spotlight across the globe with a very well deserved rise to fame, from struggling to get access to compete at five star shows, he has now won two five-star Grand Prix events on two different horses and, in the Spruce Meadows Masters, he won 17 classes and was given the ‘leading rider’ honour! Well, he has arrived here at the Andalucía October Tour and started off in flying style.

Today he was the winner of the Hipotels Trophy class, a 1.45m class held in the grass main arena. Matt was riding ‘Curraghgraigue Obos Flight’ who is by ‘Obos Quality 004’,dam sire ‘Errigal Flight’ and owned by Rachael Evison. This was a 2 phase class and the pair stopped the clock, in the second phase, in just 25.43s. This proved to be well ahead of his main rival, another British rider, and regular competitor here at the Tour, the top international Olympian, Holly Smith. Today she was riding the gelding ‘Don Vito’, owned by Poden Farms and they stopped the clock in 26.69s. In third place was Irish rider Niamh Mcevoy with ‘Templepatrick Welcome Limmerick’ finishing in just 26.81s.  Poland took fourth with Andrzej Optalek and ‘Le Cordial’,with the Belgian rider Celine Schoonbroodt-De Azevedo and ‘Clinto T Z’ in fifth.

The British were on form in other classes as well, with another top rider who has been making a name for herself in the GCT,  Jodie Hall Mcateer, and who was the winner today in the 1.40m class with ‘Kimosa Van Het Kritrahof’ in just 38.21s. This was a jump-off class with eight riders going through.  Jodie beat off the challenge from yet another top rider Martin Fuchs (SUI) who took both second and third places, with ‘Che Tipa’ and  ‘Buttercup’ in 38.46 and 38.63s respectively.

There was a Spanish flavour to the 1.30m with Iván Serrano Sáez and ‘Gold Empire’ winning the class and hot on his heels, Álvaro Castro Román with ‘Jub’ in second.  Eleanor Hall Mcateer, Jodie’s sister, was third in this class with ‘Justus Di Ca’San Giorgio’’.

The 1.20m had a British top three, all from regular competitors here at the Tour.  The win went to a Tour favourite, Kayleigh Watts with ‘Whisper of Joy’, second was Eleanor moving up on the podium this time, with the ‘Chacco Blue’ bred,  ‘Billy Penny’ and third was Abbie Crippen, back after a short break and starting off well with another Billy,  ‘Billy Kvitfjell’. In fact fourth place was taken by the rider from the USA, Molly Hay with ‘Billy Bilboa’. Welcome back to all these regular Tour riders!

In the 1.10m the Ukrainian rider took first, equal second and fourth places! with ‘Ventera’, ‘Aloha du Dame’ and ‘Heissa’. (resp)  Well done Kateryna Downer!  She was stopped from the complete hat trick by American rider Hannah Flourney’ Buchan, with ‘Vannina de Pience’ who took equal second con ‘Ventera’.

The 7yr olds also jumped today with Niamh Mcevoy again in the rosettes this time with ‘BP Limitless’; second was Armando Trapote Mariscal, our new ‘Spanish Absolute Champion’ today riding ‘Diabla PS’ and in third and fourth were American riders, Julie Welles‘Phoenix VD Withoeve’ and Molly Hay with ‘Fala Brecourt’. Mathew Sampson with ‘King Lepantino’ was fifth.

Jumping continues tomorrow with eight classes and the first Longines Ranking class. The II Andalucía October Tour, is sponsored by the Consejería de Turismo, Cultura and Deportes de la Junta de Andalucía, and co-financed by the European Union.

Tomorrow we also hold a fun class, the Suzuki Jump&Drive. Riders must complete a small course of jumps and then drive through an obstacle course in a Suzuki car, all this is set against the clock and usually takes place amid much hilarity. Cervezas Victoria, are also patrons of the class and provide free refreshments during this fun event.

On Sunday we finish off this first week with the much more serious Suzuki Grand Prix  Ranking class set at 1.50m  metros.

Entrance to the showgrounds and parking are free. Do come and enjoy the ambience, top class sport, refreshments and shopping available at the grounds.
