Strong start for Javier González Fraga and Sonic JGF at the Andalucía Sunshine Tour

Vejer, February 5, 2026.

Javier González Fraga delivered one of the standout performances of the day by placing among the top combinations in the feature class, on a day that also saw Álvaro González de Zárate secure the only Spanish victory.

The Andalucía Sunshine Tour resumed action at Dehesa Montenmedio after the weather-enforced break that forced the cancellation of the second competition day. The third day of sport brought very positive results for the Spanish contingent, highlighted by Javier González Fraga’s top finish in the main class and Álvaro González de Zárate’s win in the Medium Tour.

In the day’s highlight class, the 1.50m Big Tour, Spanish colours were well represented by Javier González Fraga and the CDE stallion Sonic JGF, who produced a superb performance to claim third place. Victory went to Belgian rider Andres Vereecke aboard Ona van de Begijnakker, a daughter of Comme Il Faut. Britain’s William Reckert finished second with Fifty Shades of Grey, completing a podium packed with international quality.

The partnership between González Fraga and Sonic JGF once again confirmed their excellent form, after closing the 2025 season with a CSI Grand Prix win and kicking off 2026 with a top-level result at one of Europe’s most demanding circuits.

Another key name of the day was Álvaro González de Zárate, one of Spain’s most promising riders. The Vitoria-based rider claimed victory in the 1.40m Medium Tour class with Stakkaldato PS, stopping the clock fastest among the 17 clear rounds. He finished more than a second ahead of Italy’s Matteo Checchi, who placed second with Elixir de Chalusse.

Speed classes saw Moroccan riders dominate the 1.35m Big Tour, where El Ghali Boukaa with Goldeneye des Court and Ali Al Ahrach with Real Music secured first and second place, respectively. The Moroccan anthem was also heard in the 1.30m class, following Yahia Said’s victory with Eliza B. In that same class, Spaniards Kevin González de Zárate and Carolina Villanueva finished second and third aboard Helsinki and Voice de Chenaie.

In the Medium Tour, Dutch rider Sanne Thijssen once again enjoyed success at Montenmedio, taking the win in the 1.45m class with Os le Petit Cheval. Italy’s Aurora Guaragno topped the 1.35m class with Orlando, while Belgian rider Stefan Weemaes claimed victory in the 1.30m class with Merald Misteruno E.

In the young horse classes (CSIYH), Barones de Jolie Z, ridden by Matt Garrigan, came out on top among the 8-year-olds. In the 7-year-old category, wins went to Ever So Clever GM Z and Miss Contoulonia PS, ridden by Jack Ryan and Pippa Goddard respectively. The 6-year-old classes were claimed by Corinio Z with William Reckert and Uquila, who added another victory to her record with Czech rider Jaroslav Sima.

The Andalucía Sunshine Tour is sponsored by the Regional Government of Andalusia, through the Ministry of Tourism and Andalusia External Affairs, and the Provincial Council of Cádiz. This institutional support underlines a strong commitment to promoting the region, hosting internationally renowned sporting events and boosting the area’s economic, cultural and tourism development.
