Top competition returns to the Sunshine Tour

Top competition returns to the Sunshine Tour

The superb Southern Spanish facilities here at Montenmedio are prepped and ready to hold the new Autumn Tour which kicks off tomorrow. There are around 300 horses already here and many international riders ready to compete

The fabulous installations are once again filling up, with riders from 25 countries already inscribed in the first week of our new Autumn Tour, here at the Sunshine Tour site. This important new event will bring top level completions to the Cadiz area of Andalucia and will hopefully become a regular date on every rider’s calendar.

The first week of jumping begins tomorrow, the 10th of Sept, with many top international riders keen to be part of the inauguration of this new Tour, such as the Olympic riders, Laura Kraut for the USA, and Cian O’Connor who rides for Ireland. Other Irish riders here are also regular Sunshine Tour participants, Billy Twomey and Anthony Condon. From Germany we have David Will and the very talented young rider, Nicola Pohl. From Italy, Luca Moneta and from the UK, James Wilson. Amongst the many Spanish riders competing will be top riders like Eduardo Álvarez Aznar, Mariano Martínez Bastida and our local rider Jesús Torres.

The Autumn tour is divided into three blocks of jumping each consisting of two weeks of competition. The first block is the 10th to the 20th Sept, the second will be the 30th Sept to the 11th Oct and the final block will be the 21st to the 29th November.

This week there are the following classes; Young Horse classes will run from Thursday to Saturday for the 5/6/7 yrs olds; there is an international 3* (CSI3*) that will finish on Sunday with the event of the week, the 1.50m Grand Prix class. This class is a points class for the Tokyo Olympic games of 2021 and will take place in the main grass arena. The GP will be designed by the 3* course designer Elena Boix Gracia. The local Spanish, 2* course designer for the first week is Marcos Núñez García

This competition schedule will not change across the three blocks but in the final weeks a Nations Cup round (CSIO3*) will take place and is not to be missed. Alongside this we shall be running the International Young Horse CSIYH* competition and also a 2* event (CSI2*). Prize money will be over 800.000€ with 17 FEI ranking points up for grabs each week of competition

As you are all aware due to strict sanitary restrictions were are enforcing a mandatory COVID protocol to protect the health and safety all participants and workers at this event. This is a closed event with no public or audiences allowed and no more than 300 people may be in the installations. The sheer size of the showgound with multiple arenas and a vast number of stables, plus all the measures we have taken for your protection, means that riders, grooms and team members may go about their business in a secure and safe area. At the same time it is up to all participants to follow the protocols. Your temperature will be taken on entry to the showgound and the use of masks is mandatory throughout the installations. Alcoholic gels are placed at strategic points around the grounds and we ask that you use them correctly and regularly on entering any new area.

With all the measures we have taken we can guarantee that we are in line with every protocol outlined by the Sports Council (Consejo Superior de Deportes) and the Spanish Federation (Real Federación Hípica Española), keeping all risks of contamination with COVID-19 to an absolute minimum.
