Elena Appendino wins the Small Grand Prix with ‘Grupo Prom Hacienda’

Matthew Sampson, takes second with ‘Elisa BJX’ and fourth with ‘MGH Candy Girl’ and, Ismael García Roque, third with ‘Halifax W’

Eighteen year old, Spanish rider, Elena Appendino had her second big win of the week today in the 1.40, Small GP here at the Andalucía Pre Sunshine Tour, which is sponsored by ‘la Consejería de Turismo, Cultura y Deporte’ and co-financed by the European Union.

 

Elena won this class with the 11 yr old mare, ’Grupo Prom Hacienda’, who is by the beautiful grey stallion who regularly competed here at Montenmedio, and after whom, arena 2, is named ‘Coltaire Z’, with the dam sire ‘Libertino’. The mare is owned by José Alfredo Hernández Ortega and this pair, topped the leader board in a jump off of nine horses. This was their second win at this height this week, as yesterday they also won their class, a great start to their Tour.

 

In both second and fourth places was the very consistently successful, British rider, Matthew Sampson; he took second with ‘Elisa BJX’ (‘Eldorado VD Zeshoek’ x ‘Quilot’), another top place to add to her other two wins here, at this height so far. Matt took fourth place with ‘MGH Candy Girl’ (‘Sligo Candy Boy’ x ‘Cruising’), and this continues his very positive start to the season so far.

Spanish rider Ismael García Roque had a great day of jumping, repeating yesterday’s third place in this class, with ‘Halifax W’ (‘Plot Blue’ x ‘Libero H’), who is owned by Álvarez Moya Horses SL.

 

Just behind, in fifth, was the Dutch rider Rogier Linssen with ‘Kismet’ (‘Kannan’ x ‘Tenerife VDL’), their best results so far here at Montenmedio.

 

There was a Spanish win in the 1.35, from Leticia Riva Gil, the second win for her this week with the gelding ‘Conan de Taute’, by ‘Mylord Carthago’ x ‘Tricolore II’. This combination were the only ones to stop the clock in under 60 seconds but Swedish rider, Jacob Hellström wasn’t far behind with ‘Starline’ taking second and moving up one place, from his results on Thursday. Elena Appendino also took third in this class with ‘Billyjean’.

 

Belgian rider, Cassandre Malherbe won the 1.20 with ‘Nina Van Het Avenhof’, beating off the challenge from British rider, Megan James with ‘Whitesparke Mystery’ and in third was another Spanish rider, Juan Riva Francos with ‘Uthope de la Roque’.

 

Another British rider Megan Broadway with ‘Stella Butterfly Z’ was the winner in the  1.10; second was Hungarian rider Blanka Kelemen with ‘Chacco SZ’ and third was German rider, Julia Jaschinski with ‘Erinette V’.

 

In the 7yr old class, the British rider Daisy McKinlay finally took the top spot with ‘Donder Slage’, who was second in this class yesterday and third on the 20th. Dutch rider Liv Linssen with ‘Lacona’ was second and German rider, Helmut Schönstetter with ‘Eic Arwen’ was third. In fourth was Spanish rider, Armando Trapote with ‘Cinsey EK’ and in fifth, another British rider, Jake Saywell with ‘Lente’.

 

Gyula Szuhai Jr. for Hungary, won the 6yr old class with ‘Cornet’s Blue SZ’, this being the third time they have won this class. They literally flew around today finishing with more than 5 seconds in hand. Cassandre Malherbe was second with ‘Fly Veganair Z’. Gyula’s brother, Rodrigo Szuhai was third with ‘Carta Blue SZ’.

 

Megan James was once again our winner in the 5 yr old class with ‘N.Corofina Texel’. Finnish rider, Erika Hanhisuanto was second with the incredibly consistent ‘Ascalina D’Ive Z’. In third was Megan Broadway on her second podium of the day, with ‘Navarro L’.

Tomorrow is the much anticipated, FEI Longines Ranking, Big Grand Prix class and held alongside, will be the 1.35, 1.30, 1.25 and the 1.10 classes. This will complete the second week of this CSI2*, Andalucía Pre Sunshine Tour where around 350 horses and 100 riders have taken to the arenas here at Montenmedio. Many riders have been using this ‘Pre Tour’ as a warm up event for the XXIX Andalucía Sunshine Tour 2023; which will start on the Tuesday the 7th of February and already has a record numbers of entries. More than 1.000 riders and 3,500 horses from 60 countries are booked in, and numbers will most likely increase over the seven weeks of competition.

 

The showground is open to spectators and access and parking are free. Not only can you visit and watch top class showjumpers at their best but there is a shopping village and there are numerous restaurantes to sample, all affording unique views of the different arenas. All in all we can offer visitors to the Andalucía Sunshine Tour a great family day out.
